The seven steps
What happens between the first look and the final walkthrough
Each step exists because skipping it is how paint jobs fail. Here is what we actually do at every stage.
- 1
Assess
We inspect and understand the surface.
Every job starts with a free site visit. We check the condition of the existing coatings, timber, plaster and cladding, look for moisture damage and failed paint, and on older homes assess the likelihood of lead-based coatings so the preparation can be planned properly. You get a written quote that describes the work — not a number guessed sight-unseen.
- 2
Protect
We protect what matters most.
Floors, furniture, fixtures, landscaping, neighbouring surfaces and occupied areas are masked and covered before any dust or paint is made. On commercial and body corporate sites we plan around people who still need to use the building.
- 3
Prepare
We wash, sand, strip and prep properly.
Surfaces are washed down, scraped, sanded and — where a coating has failed — stripped back rather than painted over. Wallpaper is removed cleanly and the wall beneath is made paint-ready. This is the step that decides how long the finish lasts.
- 4
Restore
We repair and restore surfaces.
Plaster is stopped and sanded, cracks and holes are filled, weathered timber is treated and damaged boards are repaired before a topcoat goes anywhere near them. Problems get fixed, not hidden under another coat.
- 5
Prime
We prime for the surface, not by habit.
Bare timber, repairs and porous surfaces are sealed with a primer matched to the substrate, using Dulux or Resene systems, so the topcoats bond and stay bonded.
- 6
Finish
We apply the coating system with care.
Two full topcoats in the colour and finish agreed on your quote, cut in cleanly around trims, windows and features. Interior, exterior or commercial — the same attention to detail.
- 7
Inspect
Final check and client walkthrough.
We inspect our own work, touch up anything that needs it, clean the site and walk through the finished job with you before we call it done.
What EGP stands for
Excellence. Groundwork. Precision.
Three words behind every job we take on. They are what EGP means — and what you are hiring when you hire us.
- Excellence
We don't settle for “good enough”.
Quality starts with how a job is assessed, planned and managed — not just how the finished wall looks on handover day.
- Groundwork
The finish is only as good as what's underneath it.
Washing, stripping, sanding, repairs, restoration, masking and priming — we do the work beneath the coat properly before any paint goes on.
- Precision
Details determine the result.
Careful application, clean lines, the right coating system for the surface, and a final inspection before we call it done.
EGP — Properly prepared. Built to last.
What we do
Prepare. Restore. Finish.
Three pillars, one Standard. Surface preparation and restoration are services in their own right at EGP, not a line buried under painting.
Prepare
Washing, scraping, sanding, stripping and substrate preparation done the right way.
Restore
Timber restoration, plaster repairs and failed-coating removal — we restore what others paint over.
Finish
Interior, exterior and commercial coating systems applied with care and inspected before handover.
Why it matters
Why we work this way
Paint only lasts on a sound surface
Most coating failures — peeling, bubbling, flaking — happen because the new paint was put over something that had already let go. Preparation is not a step before the job; it is the job.
Moisture and weathered timber need dealing with first
Auckland weather gets into bare or cracked timber and behind failed paint. We treat and repair what we find so the finish protects the home instead of sealing a problem in.
Older coatings are assessed before stripping
On older homes we assess the likelihood of lead-based paint and plan the stripping method, dust control and clean-up accordingly, so the work is done safely for your household and ours.
The written quote defines the scope
You see in writing what will be washed, stripped, repaired, primed and coated before we start. No surprises, no sight-unseen pricing.

Let's see what's underneath.
